CID takes over
complaint against Colombo lawyer
The Attorney General's Department has ordered the CID probe a case
where a Colombo lawyer has allegedly cheated a woman to the tune
of Rs. 375,000 and a UNF Cabinet Minister had intervened on his
behalf to stop local police investigating the complaint.
The Sunday Times
last week reported this incident where the lawyer is alleged to
have demanded Rs. 675,000 rupees from a woman promising to obtain
bail from the Magistrate Court for her husband, who had been remanded
for an offence under the Emigration and Immigration Law.
The woman later
came to know that a magistrate court had no jurisdiction to grant
bail for such an offence and demanded the money back from the lawyer.
The woman in
her complaint to the Borella police said the lawyer was evading
her after paying back Rs. 300,000. But the police could not make
much headway when the Cabinet Minister is reported to have threatened
a police officer who went to record a statement from the lawyer.
The politician is alleged to have told the officer to drop the case
as the lawyer was a close associate of him.
On Friday the
CID recorded a detailed statement from the woman and three other
persons for five hours.
