Why Govt. won't
show its gas
Some
fifty percent of the people using gas are from the upper middle
classes and the government, therefore, does not want to intervene
in bringing the prices down, a ministerial source said.
The minister
who is on the cost-of-living committee but did not wish to be identified,
said surveys had shown that though gas was projected as a major
problem, only about 20 percent of Sri Lanka's population use gas
and ten percent of them were from the upper middle classes.
He said the
government was thus focusing on providing relief to the lower middle
class and poor people. One such move was last Thursday's suspension
of the price hikes on diesel and kerosene.
