Namibia
banking on Pakistan complacency
KIMBERLEY, South Africa, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Pakistan's surprise
loss to Bangladesh at the 1999 World Cup has been a source of inspiration
for tournament debutants Namibia, their opponents in a Group A match
on Sunday.
Although the
manner of Pakistan's defeat by outsiders Bangladesh continues to
confound the critics, Namibia believe they are capable of pulling
off a similar upset if the 1992 world champions are too complacent.
"It's a
huge task and we're under no illusions about that, but they're a
fairly topsy-turvy side when it comes to playing certain teams,"
Namibia coach Dougie Brown told a news conference on Saturday.
"On their
day, they're world-class and they can beat anybody but, when they
don't have their day, they're beatable.
"We know
World Cups dish up all sorts of surprises and that's what we're
living on," added Brown, a former England international who
plays cricket for English county Warwickshire.
"They've
six or seven world-class players but we all know they're quite a
moody side when it comes to intensity levels. We're not saying we're
going to win the game but we're going to try our best."
Bangladesh produced
one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history with their 62-run
victory over Pakistan four years ago but questions were raised over
their opponents' commitment, Pakistan having already qualified for
the next phase.
Namibia captain
Deon Kotze said he thought Pakistan's players might find it hard
to motivate themselves against a team of amateurs they were expected
to beat comfortably.
"Maybe
a team like Pakistan, who are known to be slightly up and down in
their performances, they are the sort of team that an upset is easier
(against)," Kotze said.
"Being a sportsman, I think it's sometimes very difficult to
motivate yourself against weaker opposition," he added.
"Obviously
they're a good professional side and, even if they do relax slightly
against us, they would feel that they should still be able to come
out on top. "But I think it's very difficult for any team not
to relax and take it lightly against what they perceive to be much
weaker opposition."
