Now he's talking
By
Sanath Weerasuriya
A romantic Comedy 'The Guru' starring Jimi Mistry as Ramu
Guptha, fake spiritual healer, now runs to capacity crowds at the
Majestic Cinema in Colombo.
Jimi portrays a young Indian dancer looking for greener pastures
in the US.
Heather Graham, Marisa Tomei, Michael McKean, Dash Mihak, Christine
Baranski star with Jimi in this fantastic movie.
A young Indian
dance teacher with the best moves in Delhi embarks for New York
City in pursuit of fame and fortune - only to wind up working as
a waiter in an Indian restaurant.
But good fortune
can arise from strange places as our hero, Ramu Gupta (Jimi Mistry),
discovers when a catering gig at a ditzy socialite's (Marisa Tomei)
birthday party catapults him into an extravagant version of the
American dream.
Mistaken for a spiritual healer, Ramu becomes an overnight celebrity
with the city's elite hanging onto his every word - no matter how
absurd.
The trouble
is, he's also falling in love with the one woman (Heather Graham)
who knows the real source of his seemingly profund insights.
Now, Ramu must
choose between his new found notoriety and his love for a woman
who accepts him as he is.
An exuberantly
comic tale of clashing cultures from Universal Pictures and Working
Title Films, The Guru is directed by Daisy Von Scherler Mayer.
Guru is produced
by Shekhar Kapur, Liza Chagin and Debra Hayward. Regal, Kandy too
now screens 'Guru'.

National Film Corporation has brought three recent movies
to be screened in the theatres around the country.
Among these
Santosh Sivan's "The Terrorist" and Sumeer Sabharwl's
"Valentine Days" will be released from February 28. While
the Tamil version of "The Terrorist" with English subtitles
will be screened at Concord in Dehiwela, the English version of
"Valentine Days" will be screened at Rio and Hindi and
Tamil versions will be screened at Crown in Maradana and Dinusha
in Nawalapitiya.
Based on true
story of an assassination of an Indian VVIP the story is about a
young girl whose life changes after a fatal incident.
Set in a violent
world, 'The Terrorist' is the exploration of the complex life of
a nineteen year old girl who clads herself in a seemingly invincible
armour, only to discover that she is as vulnerable as the rainbow
caught in an iridescent bubble.
Malli's life
has a brutal inevitability about it. Deeply affected by the death
of her brother at a young age, she decides to follow his example
and joins the terrorist organisation... for the cause.... she learns
at an early age to suppress her feelings so that only the cause
of her people has meaning.
In a life where
death is constant, each frail human contact, each fragile touch,
is ruthlessly destroyed. Malli moulds herself into a thing that
mechanically carries out the orders of the organization. She feels
intense pride when she is chosen over others for the grotesque honour
of being a suicide bomber, and die a martyr... But as she awaits
death with the certainty of someone about to catch a train, her
long denied inner self makes itself felt and unknown emotions swamp
her being. The film stars Ayesha Dharkar, Vishnu Vardhan, Bhanu
Prakash and K Krishna.
The movie 'Valentine
Days' directed by Sumeer Sabharwal stars Gina Marie, Manoj Bidvai,
Nikhil Sakhrani and Samir Kochhar.
In the story
Jeena (Gina Marie) is an American, coming from a mixed culture family.
Her father an Indian, had married an American and Jeena is the only
offspring. After the death of her American mother her father moved
to India and married an Indian. As Jeena settles down in India after
her fathers demise, she faces a vast difference in the culture between
America and India but soon learns to adjust. On the way she makes
friends with Samir, Aditya and Vishant. Loving and outgoing, it
is not surprising that her friendship is mistaken for love. A true
Valentine what Jeena is.
Meanwhile winner
of the Prix UIP for The Best European Film at the 49th Sydney Film
Festival, "Bend It Like Beckham" will soon be released
at Savoy in Wellawatte and Sigiri in Katugastota.
Directed by
Gurinder Chadha it revolves around eighteen-year-old Jess whose
parents want her to be a nice, conventional Indian girl. But she
just wants to play football like her hero, David Beckham. For Jess,
that means kicking a ball around the local park with the lads until
she's spotted by Jules, who invites her to join the local women's
football team. The girls are the same age and they share the same
dreams. As they become friends; their team really starts to go places.
But Jess's parents don't understand why she won't settle down and
learn to cook the perfect chapatti. Why, they wonder, can't she
be more like her sister, Pinky , who's engaged to a very suitable
young man? Can Jess overcome the obstacles and her family's opposition
to her dream sport? 'Bend it Like Beckham' has all the answers.
NFC
Chairman vows to improve film industry
Jayantha Dharmadasa,
Film Corporation chairman vowed to encourage young film makers to
do quality films in order to attract a wider audience.
He expressed
these sentiments at a media conference recently and said he hoped
to set up 47 mini theatres with seating capacity of less than 300
with the hope of screening films in remote areas.
He plans to
formulate and implement a permanent policy regarding the release
and screening of films in the film circuit. He has also solved the
problem of "hold over" in theatres after a discussion
with the film distributors. Listening to NFC chairman we felt there
will be some hope of revival for the flagging film industry in the
future.
