Bail
for six Tiger suspects
Six LTTE cadres
arrested in midsea off Trincomalee by the Navy on November 1 on
charges of carrying explosives and weapons were granted bail by
Court of Appeal in Colombo this week.
The six cadres
who are in custody will be released when the Cout of Appeal decision
is received by the Trincomalee Magistrates court. The next date
for the case has been fixed for March 25.
The six cadres
have been released on cash bail of Rs. 25,000 each with two sureties.
They were told to appear on every second Saturday of each month
to the Trincomalee police station.
The order to
release the suspects was given by justices Raja Fernando and G.W.
Edirisuriya.
The judges
queried whether the suspects would report to the police station
as directed.
Lawyer N. Srikantha
appearing on behalf of the suspects assured courts that they would
appear in courts.
The six suspects
were Selvanayagam Selvam, Ekambaram Suresh, Muttulingam Ramanan,
Kandasamy Kiruba, Shanmugam Shanthan, Athman Deepan.
The six cadres
were arrested on the eve of the second round of peace talks between
the government and the LTTE due to begin in Thailand. They were
carrying 35 claymore mines and other explosives.
State
TV accused of cheating viewers

Viewers are protesting that state television is cheating
them of their entertainment by airing more than 25 ads during a
half hour time slot allocated for a political comedy.
The political
comedy shown on Rupavahini on Sunday nights is now being disturbed
by a flood of advertisements. While the SLRC is earning excessively
it is eating into the viewers time.
Last week spectators
were given only 16 minutes viewing time, while advertisers got about
12 minutes to display 26 ads.
Furthermore,
the teledrama episode did not end but was to be continued the following
week.
The political
comedy enjoyed by millions of viewers across the country, began
at 9.09 p.m. with two minutes of credits.
The first portion
of the teledrama was shown for three minutes, followed by 16 advertisements.
Salgado
appointed SLAF Chief of Staff
Air Commodore
J.L.C. Salgado has been promoted to the rank of Air Vice Marshal
and appointed Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Air Force with effect
from January 1 this year.
He joined the
Sri Lanka Air Force in December 1972 as an Officer Cadet in the
General Duties Pilot Branch and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer
in December 1974.
Having done
his initial flying on Jet Provost Aircraft he was selected to follow
a course on flying instructions at Central Flying School, Royal
Air Force, UK. He also attended an Air Warfare Course in India and
an Executive Course at Asia Pacific Center in Hawaii.
During his
career he held the Command appointments of Commandant, Flying Training
Wing at Sri Lanka Air Force Academy, China Bay, Base Commander SLAF
Base, China-Bay and Zonal Commander in the Eastern Zone, Base Commander,
SLAF Base Katunayake and Zonal Commander Western Zone, Director
Operations at SLAF Head Quarters since 1998.
He graduated
from the Air War College, Pakistan in 1990 and also attended the
National Defence College, India in 2000.
In addition
to being awarded the "Rana Wickrama Padakkama", Air Vice
Marshal Salgado RWP, FAWC, ndc,qfi. has been decorated with the
North and East Operations Medal and CLASP, Sri Lanka Armed Services
Long Service Medal, Presidential Inauguration Medal, Vadamarachchi
Operation Medal, Riviresa Campaign Service medal and CLASP, 50th
Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal, Sri Lanka Air Force
50th Anniversary Medal and Purna Bhumi Padakkama.
