China
protests to Tyronne
By Chris Kamalendran
China yesterday strongly protested to the government over the Mullaitivu
incident where suspected LTTE cadres attacked a trawler, killing
15 Chinese nationals and three Sri Lankans.
Chinese Embassy
Counsellor Zhang Weiguo fired out a protest to Foreign Minister
Tyronne Fernando and called for a full investigation following claims
by the injured crewmen that the attack was carried out by the LTTE.
Minister Fernando
told The Sunday Times a full investigation was being conducted.
The protest from the Chinese embassy came as the Scandinavian monitors
were undecided whether the investigations came under their purview.
"According
to the statements recorded from the survivors, the attack was carried
out by LTTE members who were in civilian clothing. But we will have
to check as to how these people were identified," Monitoring
Mission spokesman Teitur Torkelsson said.
He said the
monitors had recorded the statements of the survivors and would
also be meeting the LTTE leadership on the incident. Meanwhile Navy
sources said last night that so far no bodies of the crew members
who died in the attack had been recovered. |
