UC
chairman, police clash in Puttalam
By Hiran Priyankara
Puttalam was thrown into turmoil and panic yesterday when crowds
led by Urban Council Chairman M. H. Hussain clashed with police
after they held a demonstration demanding the transfer of the area
ASP, V. Indram.
Reports said
shops were closed and traffic was disrupted when police clashed
with protesters who had blocked city entry points with urban council
vehicles. Residents said the town was tense as protesters burnt
tyres and threw stones at Police, who in turn fired into the air
to disperse the crowd.
The SLMC Urban
Council Chairman and another person who were injured in the police
attack were later admitted to hospital. Police reinforcements from
Mundalama and Anamaduwa were called in to bring the situation under
control.
The UC chairman
and his supporters were demanding the transfer of ASP Indram who
had taken action to clear the pavements of hawkers and unauthorised
structures. The chairman said the ASP's move had brought about a
loss of revenue for the council. |
