Lanka's
first Footwork Dance Sport Championship
A Danceport
championship of hitherto unparalled proportions, the 1st Footwork
International Danceport Championship will be held on April 6 at
the Hilton Colombo.
The Championship
will be held in two segments. The quarterfinals and semifinals will
be held during the afternoon session from 1.30pm to 5pm. The evening
session will consist of the finals, awards presentation and the
demonstration dances and will commence at 6.30 pm.
There will
be over 100 competitors taking part in the championship.
25 overseas
couples have already sent in their registrations and there will
be 2 couples from Singapore, 2 from Malaysia, 5 from Thailand, 5
from China, 8 from Hong Kong, 1 from Taiwan, 1 from Indonesia and
1 from Australia. The Sri Lankan team will consist of 32 couples.
Altogether
there will be 14 events in the Ballroom and Latin American sections
and these will comprise of the Beginners I, Beginners II, Novices,
Pre Amateur, Amateur, Seniors (over 40) and Seniors (over 50) events
in each section.
The championship
promises to be a very glamorous show. There will be a spectacular
backdrop through which the competitors will come on to the dance
floor, the usherers will be specially attired to blend with the
theme and the lighting will be programmed to give a very dramatic
effect to the whole show.
The music to
be used for the championship has been specially brought down from
Europe and the audience can expect to hear a brand new set of strict
tempo music, said Dharshan Wijesooriya of Footwork.
The evening
is scheduled to end on a superlative note with a Latin American
dance performance by Michael Torres and Sabine Kramski, one of the
most acclaimed couples in Latin American show dancing, 3 - times
German Champions Michael and Sabine will put on an electrifying
5-dance Latin American dance show as the grand finale of the Championship.
When taking
a look at the dance circle in Sri Lanka, it is obvious that we harbour
a lot of talented dancers, he said. According to Dharshan Wijesooriya,
organizer of the 1st Footwork Dancesport Championship 2003 one of
the main obstacles our dancers face in competing internationally
is the expense involved. Although Dancesport Championships have
been held in Sri Lanka since the mid eighties, they have been mainly
local championships. Though in recent years we have seen the participation
of approximately 4-5 couples of foreign nationality at these events
it cannot be compared to the standard of a full blown International
championship. This is one of the main reasons behind organizing
such an event.
A capacity
audience of 700 is expected for the event and tickets are selling
fast. Sri Lankan audiences have always been highly appreciative
of the Local Championships and that is one reason that motivated
Footwork to organize an event of this calibre. The Championship
will be held in the Grand Ballroom, Hilton Colombo.

the chief concert organizer.
The band, which
is scheduled to perform in Shanghai April 1 and in Beijing April
4, will not be allowed to play "Brown Sugar," "Honky
Tonk Women," "Beast of Burden," and "Let's Spend
the Night Together," said Chen Jixin head of Beijing Time New
Century Entertainment, the concert organizer behind the two China

The four songs,
all of which include sexual references, were originally cut from
the mainland release of the band's "40 Licks" compilation
album by China's culture ministry, Chen said. "Brown Sugar"
refers to an interracial coupling.
There album
"40 Licks" was released by EMI Records China earlier this
