Western
Province win in lack-lustre rugby trial
By Bernie Wijesekera
It was a drab and dull game of rugby in the first trial played between
Western Province and Central Province played at Longdon Place last
evening. Western Province were leading by 20 points (a goal, 2 tries,
a penalty) to 12 at the end of the third quarter.
This trial is in preparation for the forthcoming Asian Rugby FU
quadrangular (group A) grading to be staged here later this month
with Arabian Gulf on April 18, and against Japan on April 22 in
Colombo. The third match is against Hong Kong on May 31 to be played
at Nittawela.
This trial
was witnessed by the selection panel chaired by Dr. Maiya Gunasekera
who said that the players from Kandy who took part in the recently
concluded Hong Kong Sevens, excused themselves due to mental stress.
However, they will be taking part in the second trail on April 12
at Nittawela.
The final 23
member squad will be picked after the second trial. Youth players
focussed attention in the first trial. Royalists Rajith Jayasundera
played in two quarters, while D. Leuke played as lock for the WPFRU.
Jayasundera displayed fine talent with a superb turn of speed.
Central Province
impressed in the first two quarter with their forwards led by Pradeep
Basnayake. Referee: Dilroy Fernando
