Sri
Lanka tourism mart this month
"Destination
Sri Lanka Gateway to South Asia 2003" - a state-initiated travel
and tourism mart - will run at the BMICH from May 17 to 22.
George Michael,
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, said the exhibition
is mainly targeted at opening new markets and attracting new visitors
to Sri Lanka. It would include attractions of Sri Lanka from various
provinces depicting traditional, cultural and natural aspects.
"As this
exhibition is largely aimed at attracting more buyers to the island
this will boost the economy in the long-term, and there will be
a buyer-seller meeting at the exhibition," he said, according
to a statement from the office of the government spokesman.
CNCI
highlights need for financial support for SMIs
The Ceylon National
Chamber of Industries (CNCI) has highlighted the need for the government
to give financial support to small industries without security until
such time that they become stable and are able to stand on their
own feet.
Chamber officials
made these comments during a news briefing on a recent visit by
a chamber-arranged business group to Bangalore.
They said the
Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association has mediated and got
the state government to give loans to new small industries to set
up their business.
Among the proposals
that were taken up at different forums during the visit were increasing
flights between Colombo and Bangalore, creating cold storage facilities
at the Colombo airport and promoting Sri Lanka as a port in the
main shipping lines in the world.
The need for
storage facilities for cut flowers was emphasized in the context
of Bangalore exports of cut flowers to Europe going via Colombo
due to the unavailability of direct flights to Europe from Bangalore.
U.L.L. de Silva,
Working Director of the State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corporation
(SPMC) of Sri Lanka who participated in the tour stated that there
was a lot of interest in a joint venture with Medopharm Phamaceuticals
of Chennai to export granulated bulk drugs to SPMC which would help
to lower drug costs here. (TM)
Qatar
Airways appoints new area manager
Danny Schepers,
a Belgium national, has been appointed as Qatar Airways Area Manager
for Sri Lanka with immediate effect.
Schepers, who
graduated in 1981 in Marketing and Sales before joining the airline
business in 1990, was employed with the largest Belgian tour operator
Sunair where he handled marketing and promotional activities.
In 1990 Schepers
moved over to the airline industry, joining the Belgian flag carrier
Sabena and handled assignments as country manager in Africa and
numerous other European destinations.
On joining
Qatar Airways in March 2003, Schepers was appointed area manager
for Sri Lanka, with a mandate to reinforce Qatar Airways presence
in the market. "It's a very challenging opportunity for me
to step into an airline which is in full expansion, contrary to
the general downsizing that the airline industry is going through,"
he said. Schepers said that subsequent to the introduction of Qatar's
8th and 9th flight this summer, the airline's goal is to offer two
daily connections from Colombo to Doha in the near future.
