Tracy's passions
DJ of Day Breakers, the morning show on a popular radio station and young director, playwright and actress Tracy Holsinger tells Marisa de Silva that whatever she does, she does it with a passion. Here are some closest to her heart.

Chunky silver jewellery: Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes would definitely apply to Tracy's jewellery fad. "Friends have told me that I could easily knock someone out with this particular ring I wear, which is just huge," she says laughing. She describes it as having little pointy bits and pearls all over.

Her radio show: She keeps herself up to date with everything that appears in the newspapers and selects topics that would interest her listeners. "I love creating 'parody songs' on various political scenarios. My current obsession is the rapidly increasing crime rate," she says. She takes certain popular songs and changes their lyrics according to the theme she has chosen and plays them on her show. She says that what she tries to do is to give society a kick start into getting up and taking a stand because there's nothing more powerful than people power.

Theatre: Another forum she uses to reach people and make them see what life really is about. "I don't want to sound preachy or overly moralistic, but, all my plays send out some sort of social message whilst keeping the audience entertained. The best way to get across to people is through mediums they enjoy and respond to, she adds. "I'm kind of a perfectionist, I cut and chop a play a lot during its progression, to make it just right. Fortunately, I feel that all the cast I've worked with, have been able to cope with my ways."

Music: "From Mozart to Red Hot Chili Peppers, I love all types of music," says Tracy enthusiastically. She loves fusion and funk music especially. Organising contests that help promote our young local talent is also something she feels strongly about.

Achcharu: Another all-time favourite. Not having much of a sweet tooth, she seems to prefer the 'hot stuff'. Mango and Ambarella have bagged the first two spots on her favourite Achcharu list. "When I mean hot, I mean until tears are poring down my cheeks and my nose is all runny. Really daiyya, if you get what I mean," she adds emphatically.

Cats: Tracy simply adores cats. She finds them free spirits. "I once had a big, white, fluffy cat named Mrs. Doyle, who had this habit of waking me up each morning by sitting on my face. So, I awoke every day, practically choking on long white fur," she laughs. Another black cat Tracy had, thought it was a dog and hunted down anything that crossed its path.

Reading: Especially fantasy novels. The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams about aliens taking over the earth and eventually destroying it, leaving only a dumb Englishman in his pyjamas, is her all-time favourite. She also loves Tolkein, Salman Rushdie, Shakespeare and Austen. "Once a month or so, I head towards a book store and come out with way too many books," she confesses.

Travel: "Sometimes on weekends, a couple of my friends and I just get into the car and take off with no particular destination in mind. After a while we stop somewhere we like and stay there," says she. It never works out when they plan it, this way is better.

Eye make-up: "Something that I'm totally obsessed about!" she says passionately. No matter how casually she may be dressed, her eyes just have to be done. It's quite normal for her to put eye make-up on just like someone putting on their glasses or dentures, she says matter-of-factly. She claims to feel either undressed or blind if she doesn't have on her eye make-up and tends to shop for hours trying to decide which mascara or kajol to buy.

She values her independence over everything else because only then can one discover what he or she is really capable of doing and find oneself. She thinks that all women should just get out there and make their presence felt.
