Strolling down Hawker Street
By Ishani Ranasinghe
It was such a roaring success the first time around that they decided to have it once again this year. The Hawker Street Food Carnival held from May 1 - 4 certainly lived up to what was promised, the biggest street party in Colombo.

Lined up with a large number of stalls, Green Path was lit up like a Christmas tree, even though it was only May while extremely loud music blared from the speakers. And from the stalls came the unmistakable and tantalising aroma of food, and what a variety it was - BBQ, Sri Lankan, Chinese, fast food - the choice was yours. There was Mount Lavinia Hotel, Grand Oriental, Senkada, Great Wall, Taj, KFC, Hilton and many others to choose from.

Colourful, noisy and aromatic, each stall had long queues of people waiting to be served. The prices? Quite affordable, a plate of chicken koththu for Rs 100, buriyani for Rs. 150 etc.

One visitor said that if she has to be a little critical, she would have to comment on some of the chefs who looked more than a little bothered away from the five-star atmosphere. Others found seating a problem, but overall, most had fun.

Most people agreed that Hawker Street was something different that was enjoyed by all. Some said that more than the food what was great was the experience.

It's about enjoying the basics. This was what Hawker Street was about; joining in and getting lost in the crowd. Having fun while filling your stomach. To me, that was the real essence of it, and it was great. So cheers to the organisers and hopefully there will be many more such events on the menu.

Medi-Calls: Doctors at your doorstep
A doctor on call - 24 hours a day.

All you need to do is call the number and before you know it, the doctor with his team of professionals will be at your doorstep.

Started as a Proprietorship Company in 1983, Medi-Calls was the brainchild of Dr. K. Rajendra. "When I used to work as a general practitioner in Colombo, people used to ask me whether I could come over in case of an emergency, especially in the night," he explains. "It was then that this idea occurred to me. And before I knew it, Medi-Calls was born."

The aim of the company is to provide and maintain the best professional emergency medical care to households and offices registered with the company. To this end, Medi-Calls is manned by experienced doctors and paramedics trained in intensive care with ambulances equipped to handle any medical emergency at your residence or at your office.

So how does Medi-Calls operate? "It is a very simple procedure," explains Dr. Rajendra. "When a person who is registered on our list calls us, the receptionist, after finding out the details, sends a doctor or an ambulance or both depending on the emergency. If the patient is not serious, treatment is given on the spot, but if the patient is in a serious condition, Medi-Calls helps the patient get admitted to the hospital of his or her choice."

There are over 34 doctors working with Medi-Calls round the clock with three doctors on duty at any time, with four fully equipped ambulances (wth oxygen, nebulisers, suckers, splinters etc. to deal with any emergency).

Medi-Calls also attends to bed-ridden patients at home. They regularly monitor patients at home, while checking out their general condition, BP, nasal tubes, catheters, and infections like bed-sores.

Though they do not provide permanent nurses to residences, they can request Home-Nursing Services to contact the patient and recommend a nurse.

The main types of emergencies they encounter are chest pains, high fever, wheezing and accidents in adults and in children, high fever, accidental poisoning and severe diarrhoea.

Medi-Calls is also associated with International SOS Singapore, which is a worldwide Medical Evacuation Company, if a patient needs referral abroad or treatment abroad. This company would also source out the best consultants available in the country or SOS Singapore will send a team to do the needful in more severe cases. In extreme cases, Medi-Calls have also got air ambulances from Singapore with fully-equipped teams of doctors and paramedics to escort the patient to the country or destination for treatment.
