Jeyaraj
ready for a fight over Katana
By Harinda Vidanage
PA parliamentarian Jeyaraj Fernandopulle has vowed to fight back
against what he sees as an underhand move to oust him from his seat
and the party by a section of the SLFP hierarchy.
Mr. Fernandopulle
told The Sunday Times that a section of the SLFP was making serious
allegations against him through one of the tabloid papers published
by a faction of the party. He had already consulted lawyers to institute
legal action against them.
The Sunday
Times learns that moves are underway to replace Mr. Fernandopulle
as the Katana organiser. But Mr. Fernandopulle said there was no
immediate threat to him being removed from his electoral seat of
Katana and he would fight back if a group tried to oust him.
He said he
had been a member of the SLFP for more than 30 years and had served
the party since he was an ordinary level student. Meanwhile SLFP
sources said that the President had received a report regarding
Mr. Fernandopulle and she was looking into the possibility of replacing
him.
They said Jeevan
Kumaratunga and Ajantha Soysa were being considered as alternative
candidates. Mr. Fernandopulle, a senior minister in the Kumaratunga
cabinet, has been on shaky grounds since he associated with the
breakaway PA group. |
