Wine-a-day good for the heart

All those over 18 years should take precautions to avoid heart attacks and strokes through a selected diet, regular exercise, be clear of mental stress, control diabetics and blood pressure all of which are contributory factors of this deadly disease, said Dr Mohan Jayatilleke, Consultant Cardiologist, Asha Central Hospital (ACH) last week.

Speaking to the media at a press conference to announce the installation of Hewlett Petard Philips Sonos 4500 Echocardiogram, he said a glass of red wine is good for the heart. But he said under normal practice cardiologists don't recommend this as people would start exceeding the recommended level leading to other deadly diseases.

Dr Jayatilleke said the Philips Novos 4500 Echocardiogram is the latest and highly advanced most modern ultra-sound machine with pictures and images of the moving heart, showing also how the heart contracts and relaxes. "Abnormality in the heart could be easily detected such as enlargement of the heart. The equipment could also easily detect any blockades of vessels, arteries, valves and the blood flow," he said.

Dr Neville Fernando, Chairman, ACH, said the echocardiogram that was purchased in 1998 was now being replaced with highly advanced ultra modern machines
