'Take
Another Look at Negombo'
Known
to many as "Little Rome" and situated just North of Colombo,
it is said that the name was derived from the Sinhala word for Honeycomb
(meewadaya).
Negombo itself is a hive of activity due to the crowded "Bazaar".
Nevertheless, the peaceful palm-fringed lagoon and the seashore
bring about a quiet charm to this seemingly endless stretch of golden
sand with its shady palm trees and catamarans tempting many tourists
to stay on further than they had planned. Which is manifested by
the saying "Go Negombo".
For the many
wanderers there are the remains of an old Dutch Fort dating back
to 1682, as well as the many Churches of Dutch origin and architecture.
There are also
a number of Dutch Burghers who are inhabitants and there is also
a strong foothold on Roman Catholic Faith.
You've got
to travel on one of the oldest modes of transport in order to have
a glimpse of the small villages.
Travelling
on a bike along the gravel road along side the sea would enable
you to witness many local crafts and activities that are still pretty
much evident in the region.
The beaches
in Negombo are unpolluted now, which would make it the perfect getaway
for the holiday seeker who could experience a picturesque countryside
by the allay shore and the tranquillity of the surroundings which
tempts one to linger on.
It's been nearly
three decades ago that investment of Blue Oceanic Beach Hotel in
Negombo took place which gave rise to one of the biggest hotel chain
groups in South Asia, that being Jetwing Hotels. This has grown
progressively and now Jetwing Hotels own and manage 16 hotels, whilst,
at Negombo it tallies to seven hotels.
