President,
PM not to meet
President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe
are unable to meet until the week after, to discuss the UNF Government's
proposals for the future of Sri Lanka because of "other commitments",
The Sunday Times learns.
President Kumaratunga
whose PA is complaining that the set of proposals for the setting
up of an LTTE dominated Provincial Administrative Council given
to her are the wrong ones, has said she is too busy to meet Premier
Wickremesinghe in the early part of the week.
The PM who
is eagerly waiting to clarify the position with President Kumaratunga
has said he is too busy in the latter part of the week. Hence the
unconfirmed meeting for the week after.
The Sunday
Times last week exclusively carried the details of the proposals
sent to the LTTE and Cabinet spokesman and Constitutional Affairs
Minister, Prof. G.L. Peiris later confirmed that the proposals published
were accurate.
Former Foreign
Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar on Friday told a press conference that
if not for The Sunday Times the country wouldn't have known the
details of the proposals.
One of the
important issues stated for discussion between President Kumaratunga
and the Prime Minister centres on the wrong document sent by Premier
Wickremesinghe to President Kumaratunga over proposals on a provisional
administrative council also sent to the LTTE. The Premier is expected
to offer an explanation on how it came about.
But, the President's
Office yesterday said that it was 'misleading' for the government
to send one set of proposals for the President and another to the
LTTE. "The President's position is that the proposals should
be discussed at Cabinet level. But that has not happened,"
President's spokesman Harim Peiris told The Sunday Times.
He said they
were expecting an official explanation from the government about
the two sets of proposals. Meanwhile according to LTTE sources in
the Wanni their chief negotiator Anton Balasingham has declined
to comment to the LTTE on the latest proposals or be available for
a meeting with the LTTE to discuss the proposals. (See
