SLMM
to review its role here
By Shelani Perera
The Scandinavian monitors are reconsidering their role in the peace
process following continuous refusal by the LTTE to respect their
ruling on a controversial camp in Kinniya, the SLMM's deputy chief
Hagrup Hauckland said.
The move came
after the LTTE's political wing leader S. P. Thamilselvan avoided
a meeting in Kilinochchi with SLMM chief Tryggve Tellefsen to further
discuss the dismantling of the camp. The monitors in a strongly
worded letter to the LTTE on Friday called on it to move out of
the camp, which the SLMM reiterated was in a government-controlled
area.
Mr. Hauckland
said they were awaiting a reply from the LTTE and if there was no
positive response they would ask the Sri Lankan and Norwegian governments
to review the role of the SLMM.
However, Mr.
Hauckland said options were being kept open. The SLMM also raised
questions about freedom of movement for its officers after an SLMM
vehicle was stoned by groups allegedly linked to the LTTE. |
