Are you listening?
‘Time to talk’, ‘What about us?’ and ‘Give us our freedom’, were the thought-provoking suggestions on a variety of colourful posters displayed by the students of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya last Tuesday by the school gate and along the wall bordering Galle Road.

Concerned and worried about the rising wave of violence against women and children in the country, the students of HFC from Grades 6 to 13 had decided to do something about it. Setting the wheels rolling about a month ago, Head Girl Anushka Fernando supported by other seniors had gone from class to class talking to the students about the problem facing women and children. A senior had also given a speech on the effects of such violence.

“Making society aware that our lives are at risk was something we could do. And that’s what we did,” says Anushka. They mobilised the students and got them to draw the posters.

“Passers-by stopped and looked and even people in vehicles peered at the posters,” said Anushka, adding that they have also collected signatures from the students to send to the relevant authorities.

As the students have urged, the time has come to take action to curb violence against the most vulnerable group in society - women and children. Is anyone listening?
