Killing
of 600 policemen: Where is justice?
There is a famous saying that the law is no respector of persons.
As we saw in the Bindunuwewa case, the verdict has been given and
we have no complaints about that.
However, what
comes to mind is a top leader asking 600 police constables to surrender
to the LTTE. What happened? All were killed. Where is justice for
them? Human rights groups are not concerned about such coldblooded
murder. Is this justice? Is justice synonymous with law or law synonymous
with justice? Will the authorities give an answer?

Changing
phone numbers
Phone numbers keep changing twice, thrice especially after the directories
have been printed and issued. This causes much inconvenience. What
a waste of money?

Katubedda's
potholed road
P .B. Alwis Perera Mawatha in Katubedda is in a deplorable state
with gaping potholes. When it rains, they get filled with muddy
water which splashes onto pedestrians every time a vehicle passes.
As a ratepayer and regular user of the road, I like to invite the
mayor and the ward member to have a good look at this potholed road.

It's
economic violence
Some people always resort to strikes, hartals, picketing campaigns
and boycotts to obtain trivial benefits. This is economic violence
and should not be tolerated.
Even
public property is not spared and we have seen the roofing on bus
halts removed, bus seats torn apart and graffiti scribbled all over
the walls. Religion seems to have failed to instil goodness in people.

Remove
illegal constructions
I agree with the writer from Negombo that the police were responsible
for finding a solution to the traffic congestion on the Ja-ela-Colombo
Road and that they should be commended. Let's hope the police will
be able to compel the local authorities to cut the branches of the
trees overhanging onto the road as well.
Another
area which needs to be looked at is illegal constructions by the
roadside. Removal of these illegal constructions will be no easy
task for the police. Those behind them will have influential persons
to support them. It seems to be the practice not to demolish illegal
constructions if the walls have posters of politicians during election
time. Let's hope the police will take action.
