CH
in a smashing win over Army
By Shamseer Jaleel
CH - 69
Army - 17
CH and FC ran through Army SC's defence no less than 11 times in
an exhibition of fast open rugby yesterday at Maitland Crescent.
CH and FC beat Army SC by 69 (7 goals, 4 tries) to 17 (1 goal, 2
tries.) At lemons CH and FC led 36-10.
It was rugby
at its best with Fred Moe, Kenijoji Rakata and Jimmy Bolakora running
through Army defence. In the first half Fred Moe scored four superb
tries. The CH and FC forwards gave an excellent account of themselves
with Dushantha Lewke and Wijesekera playing their hearts out. Though
CH and FC had a major share in the line outs most of the time Nalin
Dissanayake kicked aimlessly, which kept the three quarters praying
for the ball.
After being
outplayed in the first help the soldiers fought back early in the
second half. But it lasted only for 20 minutes. It was CH's day
what ever they did went right but Army looked a sorry picture, as
they did not even tackle their opponents.
CH and FC drew
first blood in the eighth minute of the game when Fred Moe crashed
through the Army line to touch down which was goaled by Nalin Dissanayake
to give a 7-0 lead to CH. But the solders hit back immediately with
Ian Simiyd intercepting a pass to score far right. The conversation
was missed; at this time CH had a narrow lead at 7-5. A few minutes
later CH and FC scored at will finding holes in the weak Army defense.
In the first
half Fred Moe scored four tries along with former Isipathana players
Dinesh Kumara and Mayura Yuganthara touching down, once each. Nalin
Dissanayake converted three of them. For Army Ian Simiyo scored
late in the first half, which was his, second try. Both went unconverted
to leave the score 36-10 at the breather.
After the turn round CH scored five tries which Kenijoji Rakata
planting three of them and Jimmy Bolakora hit the nailing on the
coffin with two magnificent tries during the dying stages of the
game.
Army's center
Ian Simiyd crashed through for his third try of the match. When
the final whistle went it was CH - 69, Army - 17. In this game both
teams scored 14 tries with the foreign players of both clubs scoring
12 of them. Referee - Dilroy Fernando

Anura
Rohana proves his mettle in India
SRINAGAR, July 25: Sri Lankan sensation Anura Rohana proved his
mettle in his very first tournament on the Hero Honda Indian Golf
Tour when he returned the day's best card at six-under 66 to move
to sixth place at seven-under 209. Harmeet Kahlon was seventh at
six-under 210 while Uttam Singh Mundy was also lurking as a potential
threat at five-under 211.
Rohana, a product
of the Royal Colombo Golf Club is in his Rookie year in professional
golf. The Sri Lankan qualified for the Hero Honda Golf Tour in style,
finishing second at the Qualifying School in Pune in June this year.
Regarding his round, Rohana was pleased as punch. "I played
some really consistent golf today," said the golfer who had
an impressive 17 Greens in regulations.
He returned
seven birdies and erred just once when he three putted on the par-3
12th for a bogey. "I hit the ball really close today and was
left with relatively short birdie putts, so my approach shots were
the highlight of my round today," he added. The day began with
Arjun Singh enjoying a three-stroke lead over the field. However
it was a surprisingly wayward Arjun on the front nine as he repeatedly
missed fairways off the tee. The penultimate day of a golf tournament
is popularly known as the 'moving' day'. Each player tries to move
into contention.
On the third
day of the Rs 18-lakh Kashmir Open being played at the outstanding
Royal Springs Golf course, six players moved within two strokes
of each other at the top.
In the season
opening event of the Hero Honda Golf Tour, which also happens to
be the first 'major' of the 2003-04 season, defending champion Digvijay
Singh shot a brilliant round of five-under 67 to join India's No
1 player Mukesh Kumar and the surprise packet Pappan on top of the
leader-board at nine-under 207. Overnight leader Arjun Singh survived
a disastrous stretch of two holes and was tied for the fourth place
at eight-under 208 along-side Asia's No 1 player Jyoti Randhwa.
