‘Pathok
Palama’:Errors that cannot be rectified
By Len Ranjith Mahaarachchi
Popular TV Channel ‘Swarnavahini’ unfolds every Tuesday
at 7.00 p.m. a theme from the dream world titled “Pathok Palama”,
whose screenplay is by veteran star Sriyantha Mendis.
The story deals
with a theme where when one takes an early decision in life which
is timely unsuitable, one has to face the consequences. Many when
young arrive at life’s decisions when the time is not ripe,
but by the time the folly is realized it is pretty late and nothing
can be done to right the wrong decision. Nirmala is the main character
whose erratic decision, taken when young, leads to a series of errors
that cannot be rectified.
The Heenthennna
family is a feudal type of family where time honoured traditions
are kept with precision. Heenthenna Hamine is the wife of a school
principal who is a peaceful man. They have a son who is on the verge
of entering higher education in a campus. As any other young man
he falls in love but the difference here is that Nirmala is a poor
village lass, whose lifestyle is a polarized one from the Walawwa
mentality of the Heenthennas.
Their secret
affair climaxes with the couple eloping and getting married which
situation is privy to their parents. On learning of the registration
of their son, the feudal couple breaks ties with him, dropping him
off their line of generation. The duo settle down in a quiet location
near a friend of Jagath’s - one Dabare. This person works
as a resident foreman in an engineering firm and only his mother
and his young daughter reside in the house.
They offer
help to the newly married couple who have to fend for themselves.
Jagath is unemployed and to add to the situation he starts drinking.
Meanwhile Nirmala is pregnant and life becomes difficult due to
financial constraints.
Jagath often
tends to fight with his wife accusing her of destroying his life.
Not finding a better job, Jagath finds employment under an undertaker,
now glorified as a funeral director. His job is to embalm corpses
and prepare them for burial.
In course of time Nirmala gives birth to a bundle of joy but there
is no change in Jagath who goes from bad to worse. What he earns
is just enough for his drinks only and to make ends meet the embalmer
becomes a daylight robber.
The cast includes
names like Jagath Beneragama, Ruwanthi Mangala, Hashinika Karaliyadda,
Edward Gunawardene, Menike Attanayake, Daya Alwis, Suminda Sirisena,
Chitra Warakagoda and a few others. It is a P. Mampitiya production
which has been directed by Sumith Kumarage.
The
success story of Kumar & Yasmin
With the popular programme “Bonsoir” celebrating its
18th birthday this month, its famous producer/presenter duo Yasmin
Rajapakse and Kumar de Silva continue to enjoy their record of being
the ‘longest running co-presenter duo, in the history of Sri
Lankan television’.
Yasmin and Kumar took
over a six-month old ‘Bonsoir’ in January 1986 and infused
freshness and dynamism into the programme making it appeal to a
wide range of viewers. Coupled with the extensive television production
training they both have had in Paris, they were the pioneers who
took the programme’s presentation into the outdoors, bringing
it greater colour and more animation.
Eighteen years down the
line, Yasmin Rajapakse now divides her time equally between France
and Sri Lanka. While in France she tours the country collecting
extensive video footage on a diverse range of subjects which enrich
the programmes she does for ‘Bonsoir’.
Among her recent successes
was the documentary on French nobleman Count de Mauny, who arrived
in Ceylon in the 1920s and built the octoganal house on the little
island, then known as “Ganduwa” (now Taprobane Island)
in the Weligama bay. The film bears great cultural and historical
value to Sri Lanka and France.
It explores his personality
and gives an insight into his interesting family history in France,
and, the two decades of his life spent in Ceylon until his death
in Jaffna. Now in France, Yasmin is currently researching and filming
her second documentary “The French Pass” on the French
naval expedition to 17th century Ceylon.
Well-known media personality
Kumar de Silva has, on the other hand, diversified his interests
locally with ‘Adahas’, his popular event designing,
public relations and media consultancy company, known for its creative
and quality work.
A sought after corporate
compere, he is still very much a part of ‘Bonsoir’ while
also continuing his monthly chat on ‘Dhamma in Daily Life’,
telecast over ITN on poya nights, in addition to conducting interviews
for ‘Business Matters’ over Rupavahini’s Channel
EYE.
Kumar is currently working
closely with Dr. Lester James Peries on the latter’s autobiography.
Each film takes the form of an extensive chapter, revealing interesting
incidents, episodes and all that went into the making of the maestro’s
nearly twenty films.
Yasmin and Kumar recall
“great times on Bonsoirs past”, and, together with the
programme’s second generation producers and presenters, look
forward to greater times in the years ahead.
