The joy of ballet
The Oosha
Garten of Ballet presents Joie de la Danse (Joy of Dance) from August
22 to 24
at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
Oosha Saravanamuttu's
name is synonymous with ballet in Sri Lanka. The programme for Joie
de la Danse consists of several works ranging from classical ballet
to contemporary and modern dance.
"Drums",
a new work choreographed by Oosha to a rhythmic and exhilarating
composition by maestro Ravibandu fuses classical and modern elements
to express the joy of dance.
Another exciting
piece is Ravel's Bolero, defined by its hypnotic movement, dramatic
intensity and breathtaking crescendo.
The programme
also features two dances from an earlier ballet by Oosha -"The
Colours of
Life". The colour pink symbolising the innocence and purity
of "Young Love" is danced in classical ballet style.
The other dance
is " Nature" to the music of Rachmaninov, evoking the
vibrancy and force of nature as well as its rustic and idyllic qualities.
The evening's
entertainment also features two pas de deux (duets) from the spectacular
repertoire of the Bolshoi Ballet - the stunning "Spartacus"
and the lyrical 'La Bayadere'. In complete contrast is the delightful
excerpt from the "Maple Leaf Rag" by jazz legend Scott
Joplin, choreographed by the doyenne of contemporary dance Martha
Graham.
There is also
a "Tribute to Sinatra" with some of the favourite hits
of Ole Blue Eyes such as the cheeky "That's Life "and
the poignant "When Somebody Loves You".
Over 20 dancers
will perform in the show, which stars Romina Gyi, Sureka Buell,
Nadira Rajapakse, Maryse Kern, Tara Kumara, Melanie Stephen, Deshani
Wickremasinghe, Kapila Palliyawardena, Rasika Jinasena, Subash Niroshan
and Romesh Gunasekera.
