CH
& FC end Kandy's unbeaten run
CH-36
Kandy SC-22
By Shamseer Jaleel
The CH&FC put a full stop to the unbeaten record of
the Kandy SC when they humiliated the champion side in their Caltex
'A' Division match played at Maitland Crescent yesterday. The CH
beat Kandy SC by 36 points (4 Goals, 1 Try. 1 Penalty) to 22 (1
Goal, 1 Penalty Goal, 1 Try, 1 Penalty). At lemons the scores were
deadlocked at 15 all.
Despite the
loss Kandy SC emerged champions of the League and at the end of
the game Kishu Gomes, the Managing Director ofthe sponsors Caltex
gave away the trophy to Kandy SC. CH were awarded the runners-up
trophy.
Kandy SC lacked
finish in their moves and they looked a sorry figure in front of
the huge crowd at the Gymkhana Club yesterday. Even though they
were playing without five of their regulars best known to them other
than Sri Lanka skipper Pradeep Basnayake and Indrajith Bandaranayake,
who are injured, they looked a very ordinary side.
This match
was was only of academic interest as the lads from Kandy have already
won the league for the third consecutive time. After the scores
were 15 all at lemons, the CH side cut loose as they changed their
ploys and played with better co-ordination and understanding between
the forwards and the three quarters.
For Kandy their
towering No 8 player cum coach Tulaga Tavita, Sajith Malikarachchi
and 'Tiger' spirited Dilip Selvam were outstanding. The clear cut
factor between the two sides were the expatriates who represented
CH&FC, evergreen and reliable kicker Nalin Dissanayake who had
an outstanding game throughout. One player from each side were sent
to the sin-bin as the game was contested at a terrific pace.
The referee
found it very difficult to control the crowd as spectators encroached
the playing area. The game almost came to a standstill due to this.
CH scored through
Fred More, Mayura Yuganthara, Jimmy Bolokoro and Alex (2). Nalin
Dissanayake, who was in excellent form, put over four conversions
and also put over a penalty.
Former Sri
Lanka centre Graham Raux has done a grand job by molding the CH
side into a winning outfit.

Kingswood
win
Kingswood
20
St. Anthony's 17
Kingswood played some superb rugby to enter the final of the
President's Trophy with a hard fought win over St. Anthony's courtesy
a Weerakkody penalty during extra time at Bogambara last evening.
At full time
the scores were tied at 17 all (2 goals and a penalty each). The
first session of extra time failed to break the deadlock and it
was left to Eranga Weerakkody to boot over the penalty in the second
period of extra time.
Kingswood missed
an early penalty but Weerakkody who had done a scorching run down
the right flank and made a forward pass to the unmarked winger,
made ample amends a minute later by putting over a fantastic 50
yard drop goal.
A long kick
by Weerakkody took play deep in to Anthonian territory and Kingswood's
winger Mohamed Latthief sold a beautiful dummy to score. Weerakkody
made it 10-0 which the half-time score.
The Anthonoins
dominated early in the second half. Centre Eranda Swarnatilleka
forced his way even off a short tap and Kingswood fly half converted
(10/7).Five minutes later Kingswood put over a penalty to make it
10 all.
Fly half Fazil
went over off a short tap taken close to the line and Weerakkody
made it 17-10 in Kingswood's favour.
Fighting fiercely
the Anthonians stormed back and center Imran somehow forced his
way to the line. With the pressure mounting, Kingswood converted
to make it 17 all.
Kingswood's
back division showed more flair and inventiveness and looked very
dangerous in possession. By contrast the Anthonians seemed to be
laying all their eggs in the basket of the Swarnatillekas. But they
were far too well marked.
