Secrets unveiled
The Visakha
Vidyalaya OGA presents leading Indian contemporary playwright Mahesh
Dattani's play '30 Days in September' as a dinner theatre experience
on Sunday, August 24 at the Hotel Taj Samudra in Colombo.
Directed by the
famous Indian theatre personality Lillete Dubey (of 'Monsoon Wedding'
fame), '30 Days in September' is a gripping tale of love and betrayal,
which reveals the horror and insecurity that haunts young victims
of child abuse. Scripted with a great deal of sensitivity and presented
with uncanny perception and feeling, Dattani has based his writing
on real life experiences of victims.
How does a
victim of incest react to life later? Is he/she forever bound by
the silence of incomprehension? These are some of the questions
the play raises, while stripping the veil of childhood sexual abuse
in a way that leaves you stunned and flinching at reality exposed.
Giving a new
dimension to dinner theatre in Sri Lanka, '30 Days in September'
will be performed in a transparent marquee under the stars in the
gardens of the Taj Samudra Hotel with giant screens complementing
the visual experience.
'30 Days in
September' features an all-Indian cast with Lillete Dubey, Neha
Dubey, Joy Senguptha, and Darshan Jariwala in the lead roles. Mother
and daughter in real life, Lillete and Neha play the same relationship
on stage.
The play has
run to packed houses and rave reviews since its debut in India.
According to The Times of India "...it deals with a major skeleton
in our collective cupboards... The play couches Dattani's searing
indictment of the social hypocrisy that stunts the adult lives of
psychologically scarred children, brutally disrupts families and
renders love impotent."
This performance
in Colombo (the 43rd since its debut) is the first in the play's
forthcoming foreign tour, which takes it to Dubai, USA and Singapore.
All proceeds
from this spectacular event will be channelled to strengthen the
English medium at Visakha Vidyalaya.
