Radio plays in print
By Marisa de Silva
Family Panorama is a collection of short radio plays, written by Milinda Rajasekera, Deputy Editor of the Daily Mirror.
Milinda made his debut as a columnist at the 'Sun' newspaper, writing the popular column 'Legally Yours', being the court correspondent at the time. He wrote a weekly column over the course of three years.
He then joined 'The Island' as a sub-editor and later became the paper's provincial editor. During this time, he contributed two weekly columns to the paper, namely; 'Diary of Citizen Dharmapala' and 'Point Counter Point'. He also scripted the SLBC programme 'Periscope' and wrote the serial play 'Family Panorama' for SLBC.
Family Panorama reproduces 15 scenes of the popular radio serial 'Family Panorama,’ which revolves around a family of six, comprising a husband and wife (Percy and Emily Karaliyawaththa), children (Menaka & Edward), grandfather (Herbert) and uncle (Berty).
Each scene brings to life the everyday happenings in an average, urban, middle class home. The manner in which this family meets and deals with everyday issues, is brought out effectively and realistically.
Readers are taken into the Karaliyawaththa household and duly introduced to each member of the family. As we read on, we are left to form our own opinions of each character.
Issues of all types crop up in the book. From the social stereotyping of women, to the conventional ways of thinking of the older generation, to arranged marriages. It's an entertaining book for the whole family. It is also ideal for role-play among friends or in school.
