Bridges of instability?
Congratulations Jayalalitha. She has hit the nail on the head. India and Sri Lanka have not only been neighbours but also friends for thousands of years.
Now Sri Lanka is facing a terrorist problem, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
The government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the LTTE which is both a pickle and a soup put together. Perhaps, as per its terms, Tiger leaders are being provided transport in Air Force helicopters and a senior Defence Ministry official has seen to the un-hindered entry of a Tiger procurement man, with no interrogation, into the country (The Sunday Times, July 27). With a situation like this in Sri Lanka, what bridges to link Talaimannar and Rameshvaram, unless the aim is to jeopardize the political stability of Chennai, by allowing the free movement of Prabhakaran to India? The politicians in Sri Lanka have not got their priorities right. First, root out terrorism in this country and then build the bridge.
