Unique classic cars event

A historic and unique event which is being held for the first time in Sri Lanka where over 70 Classic Cars manufactured between the year 1951 to 1985 will be seen in action today at the Pannala International Motor Racing Circuit which will be the first ever event of this nature to be conducted in a recognised racing track in Sri Lanka.

Classic Cars which are usually considered automobiles that are fit only for parades or exhibitions, will for the first time take part in competitive races in this historic motor races to be conducted by the Classic Car Club and sponsored by McFoil which is named as the McFoil Classic Cavalcade. The organizers briefed that before the races, the cars will compete in a competitive motor rally from Colombo to Negombo the previous day. The event is exclusively for members of the Classic Club which has a membership of over 250. The Motor Racing Club (MRA) will join hands with the Classic Club in conducting this historic event. President of the MRA Richard de Zoysa said that this wont be a mass start event and that the cars will be flagged of within a space of 15 seconds. He further said that it would be too risky to have the mass start as these vehicles are rare showpieces. Apart from the nine Classic Car events that are scheduled to be held today, the organizers have made arrangements to conduct two Formula Racing events featuring the pre and post 1985 four wheelers. -MSA
