Pongu
Thamil: Army tells GA to explain
Wanni security forces commander Susil Chandrapala has a sought written
explanation from the Vavuniya District Secretary K.Ganesh as to
how government servants attended an LTTE - backed meeting to organise
the Pongu Thamil programme to be held on September 15.
The meeting
was held recently at Suthananda Hindu Hall and was attended by school
principals, teachers and other government servants, Gramasevakas
and businessmen. They discussed the programme for the Pongu Thamil
celebrations and set up an organising committee for the event.
Major General
Chandrapala has sought explanation from the GA as to whether government
servants were permitted to attend such meetings and take part in
the events which have been organised on behalf of the LTTE.
This is the
second time that Maj. General Chandrapala has sought explanations
from government servants for taking part in events connected with
the LTTE. Earlier he sought explanations from school principals
who allowed schoolchildren to take part in LTTE activities.
The organizers
of the Pongu Thamil event have complained to the Sri Lanka Monitoring
Mission (SLMM) based in Vavuniya that seeking their explanation
was a violation of their fundamental rights saying that the event
was a cultural programme. They have asked the monitors to ensure
that no action is taken against them. |
