Sail the seas in star style

A whole new world of excitement tantalized us as we boarded flight UL 312 bound for Singapore from Colombo. We were to join the luxury cruise ship - Superstar Virgo in the Lion City. On board SriLankan Airlines, we were pampered with true Lankan hospitality, which has won the national carrier the prestigious award for excellence for in-flight service for the third time.

Early next morning, feeling energized after a good night's sleep in five star comfort at the Golden Landmark Hotel, we headed for the harbour jetty in Singapore, where we would join the floating city - Super Star Virgo. After checking in our baggage, we were met by vivacious PR manager Beena, who was waiting to welcome us at the terminal building prior to our boarding. We joined the Balcony Class - which is the Business Class - Economy is called the World Cruiser. As soon as you step aboard the ship, you are given a welcome drink of your choice at the grand Piazza, or the reception hall.

The dashing captain of "The Virgo" Captain Norell, a tall Swede, explained to us that the ship was built in Germany and had her maiden voyage down the river Ems. One of eight ships belonging to the Star Cruise family, Super Star Virgo takes you on a three-days-and-two nights voyage of discovery along the Straits of Malacca.

Travellers on "The Virgo" are inundated with a choice of entertaining things to do and see, while being transported to a world of sun drenched beaches, mystical islands and cosmopolitan and culture rich cities. Travellers can also relax on the beaches, swim in sparkling waters or explore quaint markets, go shopping and savour local cuisine. The ship's stopovers include Phuket Island, Langkwai Island and Malacca.

Guests of the Virgo are given daily programme sheets called "The Star Navigator". They have a wide choice of activities to indulge in from dawn to dusk, from sports, spa and beauty therapy to movies and karaoke competitions. The crew ensures that the guests enjoy an unforgettable holiday spent in the ambience of a luxury passenger ship. Children get special care with well-organized activities, fun and games so that parents can relax. Baby sitters are available to take care of infants.

The cuisine on the Virgo was a culinary fantasy. We indulged in a gourmet experience by savouring the delicious food from the three gourmet restaurants and the a la carte restaurant, tempted by a choice of Western, Chinese, Japanese, Indian or Mediterranean food to please the most discerning palate.

After a sumptuous dinner, the rest of the evening could be spent under the stars, dancing to the vibrant beat of Brazilian drums alongside beautiful Brazilian dancers and agile Chinese acrobats. We could also sit mesmerized at the Lido theatre, watching the wonders of Broadway on the decks of the Virgo. The Virgo artistes entertain passengers with performances from the favourite hits from Broadway. We could also go to the Oasis club to try our luck at Roulette, Black Jack or Baccarat, or sing our cares away at the Karaoke competition.

Star Cruises also offer special trips for meetings such as company anniversaries, sales incentive trips, annual dinners, seminars and product launches! Statistics prove that eight out of ten who have cruised come back for more and some never want to leave, like myself!

Managing Director of Ncar Travels and Tours Ltd. Nilmin Nanayakkara, says that spending a holiday on a cruise ship has become very popular among Sri Lankans. The demand for this type of holiday for families, couples and individuals has increased tremendously.
