Anuruddha,
Manju to box in Malaysia
Anuruddha Ratnayake and Manju Wanniarachchi of Slimline Sports Club
along with coach Col. R.K. Indrasena and manager Dian Gomes, the
CEO of Slimline, left the island on Wednesday to participate at
the third Commonwealth Amateur Boxing Championships to be held in
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 25 to September 1.
Double silver medallist at the SAF Games and a experienced boxer
28-year old Anuruddha will compete in the flyweight category. He
has participated in many overseas championships since 1995. In 1999
he won a gold medal at the Adajanjaya Cup championships in India.
Last year he
was placed fifth at the 14th Asian Games in Busan, Korea and was
a quarter finalists at the last Commonwealth games held in Manchester,
England.
A gold medallist at the Indo-Sri Lanka Boxing Championships, 23
year old Manju is listed to fight in bantam weight category. Manju
began his winning ways with a gold medal at the Indo-Sri Lanka Boxing
championship in 1996 and since then has not looked back.
In 1997 and
1998 he followed this with two silver medals at the Adajanjaya Cup
championships in India and went on to represent Sri Lanka at the
Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Asian Championships last year.
Manager of
the duo, Dian Gomes, himself a reputed boxer said that he has the
confidence that Anuruddha and Manju would do proud to Sri Lanka
and their chances of winning medals at the Commonwealth championships
are much more brighter than the Asian Games. Over 25 countries are
expected to participate in Kuala Lumpur, we have a good chance of
coming back with some medals.
The two boxers
are members of a strong Slimline SC boxing team. They undergo strenous
training at the Slimline gymnasium in Pannala. Of course due to
the boxing fanatic boss Dian Gomes who encourages them and is a
tower of strength to all the sportsmens and sportswomen at the Slimline
SC.
They are provided
with the latest technology that is used by sportsmen around the
world. In return they oblige by giving off their best in their respective
fields like Anuruddha and Manju.-MSA
Kenny
and Premukshi champs
Joseph Kenny and Premukshi Kariyawasam emerged champs at the BOD
National Sailing Championships 2003 held at the Bolgoda Lake recently.
The successful championships was organized by the Yachting Association
of Sri Lanka.
Parallel to
this event the Optimist Sailing championships for competiors below
16 years was also conducted with Akshan Jirasinha winning the race
followed by Viren Dias and Indrajith Abeysena. While in the main
event Duncan Fraser and Gail Fraser secured the second placed with
W.P.K. Janaka and K.D.S. Kumara taking the third spot. |
