SLMC
wants to represent Muslim interests at peace talks
The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) yesterday threatened to pull
out from future peace talks if it was not allowed to take part as
a separate group representing Muslim interests.
The decision
was taken at a meeting of the SLMC High Command on Friday night
at the party headquarters, Dharussalam in Colombo.
SLMC leader
Rauf Hakeem had pointed out that during the past seven rounds of
peace talks they had taken part as government representatives and
whenever there was a crisis for the Muslims they had come forward
to look after their interests and therefore they should be given
an opportunity to represent Muslim interests. He said that if the
Muslims are not represented separately their interests would not
be considered.
He said that
the proposed interim administration would have full powers and if
Muslim interests are not represented they would not be able to safeguards
their rights. |
