‘Sulang Kirilli’: Women stoop to folly
Sulang Kirilli (The Wing Bird) directed by Inoka Sathyangani is a cinematic voyage of about two hours. The film is developed in two creative planes the social and the aesthetic.

The two leading roles are played by Linton Semage and Damitha Abeyratne.
The film is to be released in Regal, Cinema Colombo and CEL circuit cinemas from September 11.

When young love ends in pregnancy the reality begins. This is what happens to Rathi a (Free Trade Zone) garment factory worker from a remote village. She finds out that her soldier lover is a married man.

What can she do about her pregnancy ? Can she abort? This brings in a legal and moral issue or can she bring forth an offspring who will have the sins of the parents visited on the child. The film clearly shows the young girl’s dilemma.

The film opens with a scene where Rathi enters a reputed medical clinic in the city to obtain her pregnancy report. With the positive report in her hand she dreams the usual dream that any pregnant woman would.

A blissful marriage with husband, home and children. This dream in its entity takes only a few seconds of running time. In fact it takes only time for her to cross the road from one side to the other and ends up when she is shocked into reality by a near fatal accident.

Watching Sulang Kirilli will arouse its audience to the reality that the young need to be educated on the facts of life. They should be taught that dreaming and youthful blood needs to be balanced with the norms of a society that is harsh and unrelenting when “lovely women stoop to folly” and “find too late that men betray!”.

Finally there is a song of hope to many young “Rathies” of tomorrow in Sulang Kirilli and this may be the reason that the film bagged many awards such as the “Best Film given by OCIC (International Catholic Bureau of Films)”, Opera Prima Award given to the ‘first works’ by the international Jury at XXI International Film Festival of Cinemateca del Uruguay in Latin America. And the film also chosen to represent Sri Lanka for the first time and was selected for the first 12 films at Tokyo International Film Festival in Japan along with its innovative nature.

Jackie gets spiritual
The next Jackie Chan action adventure has changed its title from Titanium Rain to Time Breaker. It will start shooting in August after Chan has wrapped Around the World in 80 Days with Arnold Schwarzenegger who plays a prince trying to kidnap Phileas Fogg’s sweetheart Monique. While the original concept of Titanium Rain was of a Chinese warrior who travels through time to modern-day America.

Chan will now play an intrepid adventurer in the Indiana Jones mould who gets transported back to a previous life when he goes after a valuable treasure. “The new concept will have a lot more Chinese cultural aspects and beliefs in it, such as the belief that our past, present and future lives are somewhat linked,” said producer John Chong.
