Schwarzenegger: Terminator or Governor?
By Harinda Vidanage

Few months back Arnold Schwarzenegger flew to Iraq to visit US troops positioned in the region and to promote the release of his newest Terminator movie the Rise of the Machines. Many critics said the visit by the mega star was a US government political gig to boost the morale of young soldiers stationed in Iraq who had unprecedented extended tour of duties.

But no critic thought that this might be the start of a new career by the aging star even as the new terminator movie had a line saying “I am an obsolete model”. United States has experienced the rise of movie stars as top politicians and administrators. Ronald Reagan was the star who made it to the pinnacle.
Arnie revealed his motives to Jay Leno in his tonight show last month “The politicians are fiddling, fumbling and failing,” he told announcing his candidacy. “This is why I am going to run for governor.”

He further said “I decided that California is in a disastrous situation right now,” said Schwarzenegger. “The atmosphere is disastrous. There is a total disconnect between people of California and politicians.... The people are working hard ... but the politicians are not doing their jobs.

The politicians are fiddiling , fumbling and failing, and the man failing more than anyone is Gray Davis (Governor facing recall), and this is why I am going to run.” This election is not just a routine one it is a recall election the voters will decide first on October 7 2003 is the current Governor Gray Davis unfit to continue and the typology of the election suits Arnie as one of his successful movies was under the banner “Total Recall”.

Actor Rob Lowe, who played a White House aude on television in West Wing, has joined real-life politics by volunteering for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s gubernatorial campaign. Lowe, a longtime Democrat, said he believes the action-star has injected new energy into California politics. Schwarzenegger is, “motivating and energizing people in this state that haven’t been interested in politics in many, many years,” Lowe said in a taped interview with the syndicated TV entertainment newsmagazine show “Extra”.

He is one of several high profile advisers to join Schwar-zenegger’s team. Last week George P. Shultz, secretary of state during the Reagan administration, and billionaire Warren Buffet also announced they will assist the campaign all along with the backing of the action loving President of United States George Bush.

Meanwhile Sylvester Stallone the only action hero of Cold War era USA who had equal fire power to challenge the early Terminator movies fired some warning shots at Arnie’s decision. “I think it’s very dangerous waters,” he said at the Venice Film Festival. “In that particular field you can’t yell ‘action’ and ‘cut’ and ‘take two’ and ‘take three’.”

Schwarzenegger has come under pressure over a 1977 interview in which he boasted about taking part in group sex and drug use. His reaction to all “I never lived my life to be a politician. I never lived my life to be the governor of California.” And that points to another problem with the former bodybuilder’s campaign according to his critics including some fellow Republicans who increasingly accuse him of being short on policy proposals and unwilling to engage in debate.

The recall election is not without colour as a 22-year-old porn actress Mary Carey is also running, with a campaign that includes taxing breast implants and swapping guns for X-rated films to reduce violence.

October 7, 2003 may change the life of Arnold Schwarzenegger from Barbarian Conan, army hero, Commando, futuristic battle and Terminator to the first citizen of California or make him come to terms with the difference between wheeling a gun to terminate opponents in movies and meeting challenges head on in the larger polity.
