MMC
faces woman smuggling charge
Ruling UNF Colombo Municipal Council Member Roy Bogahawatte who
had allegedly attempted to smuggle a woman to Switzerland using
a forged passport will be indicted in the High Court soon.
An Attorney
General's Department official said much of the paper work in connection
with the case was now over and action would be taken to charge the
MMC under the Immigration and Emigration Act.
The MMC and
the woman who was said to be his secretary were enroute to Switzerland,
with the latter allegedly using a forged passport when they were
detected in Dubai and deported to Sri Lanka early June.
The MMC had
obtained the visa for his wife and then allegedly affixed the photo
of his secretary to his wife's passport to smuggle her out of the
country.
An immigration
officer who was on duty at the BIA has been transferred to the head
office pending inquiries for failing to detect the alleged forgery
which was said to be quite apparent.
The CID which
probed the case then referred the matter to the AG's Department.
