CWC
lobbies Japan
By Shelani Perera
Japanese special peace envoy Yashushi Akashi is to submit documents
presented by the Ceylon Workers Congress on the Upper Kotmale Project
to the Japanese Government.
Last week the
CWC met Mr. Akashi to make representations on the Upper Kotmale
project in a bid to muster support for the cancellation of the Japanese
funded project.
CWC Parliamentarian S. Yogarajan said that his party had pointed
out the impact of the project on the environment.
The meeting
between Mr. Akashi and the CWC was arranged by a Japanese trade
union. The CWC had written to the trade union asking it to take
up the issue with the Japanese Government. Mr. Yogarajan added that
the Japanese Government has not released any fundings yet.
The party claims
that 500 families would be affected by the project and the Government
has not given them alternative land. It alleges that environmental
implications had been overlooked with the area likely to be prone
to earth slips. It also states there are 28 families who are yet
to get compensation from the Lower Kotmale project.
Meanwhile the
CEB is making all plans to go ahead with the project selecting consultants
who will be Japanese. Tenders have also been called which will be
decided on by the consultants. |
