Geneva team too strong for Sri Lanka Customs
The Sri Lanka Customs Cricket Club made an inaugural visit to Geneva Switzerland from September 5 to 8. They were hosted by the Sri Lankan Cricket Club of Geneva for a one-off match for the DINA Challenge Cup which was played at the Geneva Sports Stadium in front of a very supportive Sri Lankan expatriate community.

With ideal cricket weather, the day was set for an exciting game. Mr Prasad Kariyawasam, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Switzerland, was the chief guest.
The Sri Lankans customs team was led by Upali Ratnayake and the Geneva team was led by former Wesleyite, Dugal Jansz.

The 40-over match started off with Sri Lankans customs batting first and rattling up 176 in 39 overs. D.S.Weerakkody contributed with 33 and A.J.M.S.R. Arrawpola made 25 runs for the visitors.

Azad Jabbar was amongst the wickets for the Geneva team with 3 for 16. Geneva Sri Lankans in reply made the target of 177 with 3 wickets to spare. Skipper Dugal Jansz made a well compiled 65 runs and was backed up with a patient 40 from opener Niel Bernard and a quick-fire 30 runs from Janaka Perera.

The man-of-the-match and best batsman awards were picked up by Dugal Jansz of Geneva while A. Amarasinghe from SL customs CC was awarded the best bowler's trophy.

The tour was made possible through a generous sponsorship from DINA enterprises, based in Geneva. Mr S.I.M.Akram, patron of DINA enterprises, is a keen supporter of the Geneva Sri Lankan CC and has sponsored two DINA challenge cup matches when Geneva Sri Lankans CC toured Sri Lanka in 2000 and 2002. Another tour to Colombo is planned for April-May 2004.
