Tony
prepared to help Lanka cricket
Former Sri Lanka 'Work horse' Tony Opatha is here for good after
24 years away from the country. Opatha, has been playing for the
country for over a decade during trying times unlike at present
when the national players are afforded with fringe benefits (financially
or otherwise). "It was hard grind for us during the past before
Sri Lanka gained ICC status", said Opatha, adding: "To
play for the country was a pride". He played in two World Cups
- 1975 and '79.
What made you
make a comeback after along drought - You may be surprised I got
married again to Sandra Jayamaha last month. We have been knowing
each other for a long time. But it's never, too late and decided
to be life long partners. She is the one who enticed me to make
a comeback and settle down here. I have my own Aro Travels Sports
Co., in Netherlands managed by me.
In what way
are going to help the game which helped you to go places after a
slippery climb. With my abundant experience counting over 30 years
being involved in cricket in six countries - namely Sri Lanka, Netherlands,
S. Africa, Ireland, B'desh and in England. Played Lancashire league
cricket in the meadows of England with much success.
'Wants to help
my country to further develop its image at international level.
At present times despite with some internationally classed cricketers
the game has failed to make much headway', he added. At present
I am serving Bloomfield C and AC and NCC as consultant coach. That,
too in a honorary capacity.
Anything special
you have noticed for the downward trend. Basically school cricket
standard has deteriorated due to the fact with inexperienced coaches,
who lacked the practical side of the game. There are many areas
a coach has to look into at grassroots level. Discipline, technique,
physical fitness, mental toughness and self belief. A good example
with the performance of the Lankan Under-19 team against Pakistan.
The Lankan youth team was outclassed in all departments of the game.
It attributes to bad management and limited resources (funds).
The BCCSL must
take serious note of and take remedial measures to stem the rot.
How are you going to help the game at any level. I have no communication
problems. Prepared to help all coaches be it national or otherwise.
This in turn will assist the less affluent cricketers where the
future lies.
Finally, had
discussions with the BCCSL hierarchy to express my availability
in whatever capacity. My services are available to serve even as
a future cricket manager of the Lankan team. But not at the expense
of another holding office at present. We must all work for the right
reasons and those, who could serve the game from whatever corner
must be harnessed to uplift the game on and of the field Opatha
concluded. (B.W.) |
