Story
of ‘The Eagles’: Now and Then
Brown’s
Doo Wop classic “Please Come Home for Christmas” and
their relationships started straining. During the sessions for their
album The Long Run (which the critics referred to as The Long One),
internal rifts started surfacing.
However, the
album was released in the latter part of 1979 and it reached the
top spot in the U.S.A and peaked at number 4 in UK. From this album
sprang their fifth and final US number one single “Heartache
Tonight”. However, at the end of the day, this album was a
total disappointment. A year later, a live album came out by that
time, the group members had gone their separate ways.
In 1982, Don
Henley was interviewed (till then there was no news of them) and
asked if they would ever get together again. He replied, “When
hell freezes over”.
During the 80’s
all pursued solo careers with varying degrees of success. In 1985,
Don Henley and Glen Frey entered UK Top 20 singles chart simultaneously
with “Boys of Summer” and “The Heat Is on”
respectively. This generated a new found interest in the Eagles
back catalogue and this resulted another chart-bound compilation
album.
In 1993, the
line up which was stable in the year 1979 returned to the studios
to play on an Eagles tribute album, Common Thread, backing country
singer Travis Tritt. Soon afterwards, they agreed to reform and
a live show was recorded for MTV. This show featured 11 songs from
back catalogue. Introducing the first song, Frey said “For
the record we never broke up - we just took a 14-year vacation”.
Following this,
they went into studio to record four new tracts, including the singles
“Get Over It” and “Love Will Keep Us Alive”.
These four new tracks and the MTV sessions came out as an album
entitled, as if it had been happened, Hell Freezes Over (1994).
The group played
live shows in the USA and Europe in the next two years and very
recently, a “stunning” single “Hole In The World
appeared on the US charts breaking another long silence of the Eagles.
