Fresh
dispute embroils UGC, student group
University Grants Commission and a group of students are embroiled
in a fresh dispute with the students group claiming the UGC had
not implemented a ruling given by the Attorney General and the parliament
which allows students to reapply to an university based on fresh
AL results without withdrawing their previous registration for the
categories they had applied.
A group of
students who had passed the A/L in 2002 and registered in the university
under a different category depending on the marks they had obtained.
This group had also sat for the A/L in 2003 and received higher
marks with which they could register under a higher category. But
the UGC had not yet granted approval for students to choose the
categories they requested based on the A/L 2003 results.
Students say
that Education Minister Karunasena Kodituwakku should have instructed
the UGC to allow the students to choose the categories they had
requested for after consulting the Attorney general or the parliamentary
board if necessary.
However since
the deadline for university admissions terminated on September 30
students have been deprived of the opportunity to be registered
in a university. Only an extension of the deadline for admission
would now allow them to do so.
The students
group comprising more than 50 say that they registered earlier based
on the 2002 results being unaware what their 2003 results would
be.
"Having
spent long hours and finance to sit for the 2003 examination and
receiving high marks to enter Medical and Engineering faculties
have caused great pain of mind as this is the only opportunity we
would get to achieve our ambition. This is a great injustice to
us", they said. |
