No-faith
motion against Premier falls apart
By Harinda Vidanage
The proposed no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe
over his alleged justification of the US invasion of Iraq has been
dropped amidst confusion and contradictory claims in opposition
ranks.
Instead of
the no-confidence motion, an adjournment debate is likely to take
place on Thursday with notice for it being given by JVP parliamentarian
A.R.Anjan Umma.Anura Bandaranaike who proposed and vigorously campaigned
for the no-confidence motion indicting the Premier for his comments
in a speech to the UN General Assembly said that since the JVP was
moving for an adjournment debate, there appeared to be no option
but to go along with it.
But, others
in the party said there was division among PA members about going
ahead with the no-confidence motion. SLFP whip Mangala Samaraweera
is known to be against the motion at this stage as he feels it cannot
be carried and might expose or endanger some UNF members who are
pondering a possible crossover.
Mr. Samaraweera
is also reported to have said that if the Premier defeats the no-faith
motion, the SLFP's massive national rally in December might be undermined
and it will be a propaganda victory for the UNF. |
