birth anniversary tomorrow
The 119th birth anniversary celebration of Sri Lanka's first Prime
Minister D.S. Senanayake will be held tomorrow at Independence Square,
Colombo 7 at a ceremony with the participation of family members
and Government and Opposition politicians.
The ceremony
will commence at 8.30 a.m. opposite the D.S.Senanayake statue at
Independence Square. The chief guest will be Minister Karu Jayasuriya.
Mayor of Colombo Prasanna Gunawardena will garland the statue while
Speaker Joseph Michael Perera will lay the wreath at the statue.
President of the D.S. Senanayake Foundation PC Imbulana will also
place a wreath.
Prizes will
be distributed to winners of the essay competition organised by
the Foundation to mark the birth anniversary. A gold medal will
be presented to the best student of the Agriculture Faculty of the
Peradeniya University.
Following the
morning function invitees will leave for Mahiyangana for the religious
ceremony to be held in the evening. A pahan pooja will be held at
the Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara while an anusasana will be delivered
by the chief incumbent.
On Tuesday, alms will be given to around 30 Buddhist monks.
Meanwhile functions
are also to be held in Hingurakgoda, Ampara and Polonnaruwa to mark
the birth anniversary. |
