Mithun
wins Captain’s Cup
A smashing weekend of excellent golf with massive participation
culminating with an enjoyable awards ceremony marked the Captain's
Cup tournament just concluded. Royal Colombo Golf Club Captain Sarath
Piyaratne played lavish host.
Sharon
excels
On the first day's play there was a stunning record score of nett
62 by Sharon Fernando, a flashy young player. Sharon will take a
rap of a chop to his handicap which will do his golf much good.
Sarath Wickremaratne still quite steady and stylish cracked nett
68. Among the several centurions for the day those who impressed
most were S. Vethavinayakam, Jit Wanigasekera, Rahula Seneviratne,
Ajantha Mylvaganam and most surprisingly Neil Chanmugam. A few of
them failed to pass water a few times.
Mithun
shines
Mithun Nandasena, a near prodigy at the tender age of 15 moved stylishly
and confidently to an excellent nett score of 65. He was closely
followed by long hitting Rohan Fernando 66 and H. Weerasekera, a
steadily improving player on the same nett 66. Another excellent
score of nett 67 came from the calculating club heads of Manjula
Karunaratne.
Among those
who stuck to the disaster zone were Deepal Weerasekera, Shilton
Jayasinghe, Dion Vijgboon, Rahula Seneviratne, A.I. Gooneratne and
Zen Dharmaratne. All stretched into centuries long before lunch.
Finals
In the final reckoning Mithun Nandasena beat Rohan Fernando by a
slender 1 stroke. Nandasena had a stunning nett 65 and Rohan Fernando
finished on a sprightly 66. Nandasena on 71 and 65 took the Sarath
Piyaratne Trophy with 136. Rohan Fernando moved to settle close
behind with net 137 made up of 71 and 66. Another excellent performer
was Manjula Karunaratne. He was one over par on the 1st round and
finished with a splendid well compiled 67 in the 2nd round. Young
Tissa Jayasinghe settled for the same score and celebrated despite
being dislodged.
Awards
The ceremony which enveloped several events of the past was long
drawn and tiring. Piyaratne sensed the misery and made a well accepted
and appreciated one sentence speech. Rahula Seneviratne who rocked
his boat with a damnable score continued the turbulence the next
day in a good spirit of sportsmanship. He won the booby prize, the
wooden spoon and resounding applause for the most popular participant.
Sarath Piyaratne recognized him with an excellent Trophy.
Disaster
Zone
The inseparable trio Norman Gunawardena, Ajantha Mylvaganam and
Rahula Seneviratne were admitted to the Century Club in the Disaster
Zone for their regular contributions. |
