More
rains predicted during England tour
By Marlon Fernandopulle
An International Research Institute for Climate prediction based
at the Columbia University ,USA has predicted that Sri Lanka will
receive above normal rainfall during the period October to December
this year, thus threatening next month’s England tour.
The Institute
which specializes in predicting rainfall patterns worldwide is relied
upon by many countries and organizations.Weather dependent organizations
in Sri Lanka seek the predictions of the Institute for planning
purposes. The Institute’s predictions on Sri Lankan weather
during the past two years has been precise and accurate
Sri Lanka generally experiences rain through the North-East monsoons
during the October-December period.
Much of this
rainfall lashes in the North-East and North-Central Provinces while
the rest of the island also receives a sizeable quantum of rainfall.Already
Sri Lanka is experiencing rains throughout the country with heavy
rainfall reported in the North-Central Province.
As this pattern
is the norm during this period questions will be asked as to why
an England tour was scheduled during this period and also why a
one day International in Dambulla when rain is almost certain there.
The only two occasions when Dambulla hosted one dayers was during
May(2003) and February(2001).
This is the
ideal period to play in Dambulla as rains during this period is
experienced in the Southern and Western parts of the island. The
Sri Lanka team which commenced preparations for the England tour
last month is now hampered by the weather experienced in Colombo
and have been confined to indoor practices only.
The England team which arrives in mid November are scheduled to
play three one dayers (one in Dambulla and two in Colombo) and three
tests in Galle,Kandy and Colombo. |
