Police Com. member resigns over canvassing allegations
The Independent Police Commission member who allegedly canvassed for the promotion of her brother has tendered her resignation to President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Speaker Joseph Michael Perera, who chairs Constitutional Council which appointed the Commission, confirmed that S. N. Ebert had submitted her resignation.
The resignation comes after the Constitutional Council sought explanations over allegations that she canvassed for the promotion of her police officer brother.
Earlier, Commission member, Dr. B.N. Wijeweera, sent in his resignation on this issue.

Meanwhile, the Police Commission this week failed to have its sittings due to the lack of a quroum. The main agenda of the meeting scheduled for Wednesday was to discuss the seniority of the existing Deputy Inspectors General of Police, but only three out of seven members were present at the meeting, prompting Chairman Ranjit Abeysuriya to call off the meeting. Three of the members were absent while two were overseas.

Mr. Abeysuriya confirmed that the meeting had to be postponed due to the lack of a quourm and they would meet again early next month. The Police Commission is scheduled to send its nominations to the CC for the post of the IGP.
