Teacher allegedly assaults 12-year-old
Parents of a 12-year-old school boy, attending a leading school in Colombo, are to take legal action against a school teacher for allegedly assaulting their son.
The incident occurred on Thursday when a group of school prefects had spotted two classmates of the boy going through a newspaper. When the prefects demanded for the newspaper the boys had refused.

Though a thorough search of the class room and the school bag of each child was made the newspaper could not be found. A teacher then decided to interrogate each student. The interrogation was done by twisting the boys ears and hands and a threat asking them to own up, it is alleged.

Finally one boy unable to bear up being further harassed had said that one of his friends had brought a similar paper, but had failed to explain that the paper was brought three months back. The teacher giving the boy no chance to explain further had allegedly assaulted him leaving some gruesome marks on his face, neck and ear.

What the boy had failed to explain was that three months back while walking home after school he had picked up an envelope from the road. Having to attend classes soon after school he had forgotten about the envelope, until the next day when he had opened his bag to take out some books in class.

Explaining to his classmates how he came upon the envelope the youngsters had opened the envelope and found a cover page of a soft porn publication, along with a nude picture. Taking a look at the material the boys had then decided to destroy it fearing it would be discovered by superiors. But on Thursday the boy had returned home all bruised and shocked and disturbed that he was assaulted over something he did not do.

The boy's mother who could not believe that a teacher had the audacity to beat up a school child, immediately lodged a complaint at the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station.

"I took such action because a similar incident occurred last month when returning home after drama practices he had stopped by the basketball court where two boys were playing. He had asked the ball, and they refused to give it, once he got the ball he had kicked it in the opposite direction which annoyed the boys. The two boys had complained that my son assaulted them, the same teacher assaulted my son, and ended up with his eye swollen and a bruised face," she said.

When the boy's mother had complained to the principal the teacher had apologised saying he did not know what happened to him at that moment. "I kept silent the first time. That was the mistake I made, if I had taken some action against the teacher there would have not been a second time.

“I won't say that my son is innocent. Maybe he is at fault but no one has the right to assault a child. When the first incident happened I told them that they could always bring down the parents and take necessary action,” the mother said.

She also charged that the Cinnamon Gardens police had not been very cooperative when she went to lodge the complaint. "They wanted me to sign a document saying that I will not proceed with legal action, to which I refused. It was the same with the principal he appeared to condone the teacher's action", she said. It is reported that the teacher and his colleagues have been visiting the student's home in a bid to get the complaint withdrawn.
