Royal fight back to hold Thomians to 20-all tie

In a gruelling contest, the Thomian "Senior fours" used their skills to edge Royal on the post with a timing of 3 minutes and 26 seconds in the final event to bag the D. Fernando challenge trophy at the 35th annual Boat Race concluded at the Colombo Rowing Club, yesterday.

In spite of humid conditions there was a big crowd to watch this traditional contest between the traditional rivals. Last year STC won the overall championship winning 34 - 6.

This year Royal aiming to make amends made it a close contest. As expected they returned with fitting results to end at 20-all. Royal 'second four' rowed the race of their life to pip the Thomians by 3 seconds to lead 12 - 8.

The final the boat race - the much look forward to contest turned out to be a tussle for supremacy. The Mt Laviania schoolboys with their typical grit won the event.

Results: Junior sculls: Dejan de Soysa (STC) bt S.Dharmaratne (RC) - 3 mts. 56 secs.

Senior sculls: Isuru Perera (STC) bt Shameera Abeygunawardena.(RC) - 3 mts. 55 secs.

Junior 'B' tours: Royal bt SJC - 4 mts.

Senior Pairs: Royal bt SJC - 4 mts.30 secs.

Junior Pairs: Royal bt SJC - 4 mts.32 secs. Close contest (won 3 secs.)

Old Boys: Thomians bt Royal by two lengths.

Junior tours: Royal bt SJC Time winner (3 mts.35 secs.) (3 mts.38 secs.)
