RCGC
wins Burdett trophy
On Saturday last week the Royal Colombo Golf Club was absolutely
deserted and on Sunday at lunchtime it was worse with a string of
golfers, well-wishers and revellers moving to Nuwara Eliya for the
annual Burdett Trophy encounter between the Royal Colombo Golf Club
& the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and the roistering that follows
this great meeting. Ananda Jayasekera led the cheering for both
sides.
12 matches were
played with Colombo winning convincingly 8 matches to 4. The Burdett
Trophy was brought to the R.C.G.C. Club House under escort by Captain
Sarath Piyaratne & Vice Captain Kumar Boralessa and installed
in its secure glass case.
Singles
Joe Perera beat a much younger opponent Sunil Jayakody 4 & 3.
Massive ron Bakelman was comfortable against flashy Michael Perera
Magala and beat him 3 & 2. Nirmal Hettiarachchi continued his
earlier success with a polished display beating young Chaminda Galagedera
4 & 3 and podgy Lalin Senadhira was in complete command against
Chutti Munsoor to win 2 up and finally Anel de Silva was at his
brilliant best with a smashing victory over 'Super Cop' Sunderalingam
8 & 6. His victory was an absolute massacre seldom recounted
these days. Sunderalingam was quick to explain "My balls were
very disobedient, they never went where I directed them to go and
where Anel was concerned they were very obedient and that made the
difference". Colombo led N' Eliya 5 to 3.
2 Ball
Poursome
N' Eliya had one excellent victory when Rathven de Livera and Arashad
A Ahamed dovetailed superbly to play great golf which included a
few incredibly messy recovery shots. They beat Kumar Boralessa &
Mohan Ratnayke who rejoiced in defeat 3 & 2. Thereafter there
were 3 victories for Colombo. Sarath Piyaratne and Wimal Wickremanayake
smashed through Nimal Wettimuny and Ranil Pathirana 3 & 1. Anel
de silva supported Lalin Senadhira to the bitter end in victory
beating Rohan de Silva & Sunil Jayakody 1 up after a titanic
struggle for supremacy.
S. Wickremanayake
& N. Hettiarachchi played a very settled game combining superbly
to beat Sumeda Amerasinghe & Michael Perera Magala 2 up. Colombo
led 3 matches to one.
Excellent weather
prevailed, the course was in super condition and the arrangements
in the Club House were great. Much credit to Clive Tisser the energetic
Secretary of the N.E.G.C. There was much roistering at the Awards
Ceremony followed by incessant downing of the pride of Scotland.
It was a fun-filled night well organised and much appreciated. What
followed later at the luxury residence of Bandala Weerasinghe was
a jam packed get together of a massive group of absolute revellers
intoxicated with victory? |
