Sylvester’s no minnows in cricket

St. Sylvester’s College Kandy better known for their skills in the field of Boxing are no pushovers also when it comes to Cricket. The cricket team 2003-2004 is full of seniors. They have already played against Trinity College, St Benedicts, St Anthony's and St Peter's. All these matches were drawn.

The side is led by 5th year player Kamal Udawatte who is a left arm leg spinner and a right hand batsman. His deputy is fast bowler Shafraz Hameed who is in his 4th year. He captured over 40 wickets last season.

Another 4th year player Tharaka Jayatissa who scored over 500 runs last season is an excellent all rounder. Young Shanaz Najurdeen in his 4th year with his experience has already scored 3 half centuries and a classy unbeaten hundred against the Katugastota Antonians. In all four innings he scored heavily when the chipps were down. There are some future prospects in the line up with Mohamed Fashayl showing lot of promise with the bat.

The side is coached by former Antonian player Suresh Pieris who played for the school from 1982-87. Under his coaching the side is showing signs improvement.
Suresh who is presently the player cum coach for Kandy Cricket Club was a good rugby player during his younger days representing the CR & FC Bees.
