PA,
JVP to plan joint action tonight
By Harinda Vidanage
President Chandrika Kumaratunga is to hold an emergency meeting
with the JVP tonight to discuss joint action against the Interim
Administration proposals of the LTTE, The Sunday Times learns.
President Kumaratunga,
along with SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena and Mangala
Samaraweera will meet the JVP delegation comprising Wimal Weerawansa,
Tilvin Silva and Anura Dissanayake.
The SLFP plans
to organize a huge protest campaign against the government, pressurising
it not to accept the proposals. The agenda of the discussions is
the establishment of an action programme to conduct a series of
joint demonstrations and launch a propaganda campaign against the
LTTE interim administration proposals.
The President
has delayed her mail campaign and the SLFP door-to-door campaign
due to be kicked off last week. Meanwhile, the Government held a
meeting on Thursday at Visumpaya to organize a propaganda campaign
to muster support for the proposals. The discussion was led by Minister
G.L Peiris along with S.B. Dissanayake, Bandula Gunawardena and
Rajitha Senaratne.
Minister Peiris
on Thursday informed the TNA to notify President Kumaratunga that
the TNA would support the government in parliament whatever action
the President took.
Professor Peiris
called TNA MP A Vinayagamoorthy stating that the Government received
information that the President was planning to take drastic action
next week. Mr. Vinayagamoorthy after consulting the TNA members
sent a letter to the President explaining party support to the Government.
Mr. Vinayagamoorthy
told The Sunday Times that the Opposition was even making plans
to woo Government MPs and he informed the President that the TNA
was committed to the Government.
Meanwhile,
President Kumaratunga is due to visit New Delhi on November 9 and
10 to address two international conferences and a possible meeting
with Indian Prime Minister A. B. Vajpayee. |
