Opposition
faults Speaker's presence on interview board
By Harinda Vidanage
The Opposition is at loggerheads with Speaker Joseph Michael Perera
for being present at an interview board to select an Assistant Secretary
General of Parliament.
A senior member of the SLFP told The Sunday Times that this was
the first time in the history of Parliament a Speaker has sat on
an interview board. This is a violation of the independence and
dignity of Parliament, the SLFP member told The Sunday Times.
Secretary General
of Parliament Mrs. Priyani Wijesekera confirmed to The Sunday Times
that the first round of the interviews for selection to the post
has been held by a two- member interview board but she declined
to reveal the identity of the second member.
The first interview
had taken place on October 21. The second interview is due shortly,
she said. Applicants who were called for the interview said they
were surprised when they were informed that a knowledge of Tamil
is a necessity to qualify for the position, a pre-requisite that
had not been mentioned in the newspaper advertisement calling for
applications.
The Sunday Times
learns that the Opposition is already consulting its lawyers to
challenge the manner in which the interview was conducted. |
